Architectural History in New Hampshire
"First Period" achitecture can be found among New Hampshire's oldest surviving buildings. As settlements grew and prospered, building design began to represent local craftsmen's artistry. The Georgian Period persevered until the late 1700s and the federal style took hold from last decade of the 18th century to the 1830s. Many of the surviving schoolhouses and town halls are of the Federal style. Greek and Federal Revival styles continued in more ornate and costly buildings from the 1820s through the post-Civil War period. After the war, both homes and factory buildings were built in Gothic Revival and Italianate styles. The Gilded Age style appears in opera houses and preserved homes from the turn of the century.
